Philodendron hederaceum

Philodendron hederaceum — the heartleaf philodendron — is one of the houseplant world's true stars: robust, beautiful, and forgiving for those who occasionally forget to water. The heart-shaped, glossy leaves in bright green or bronze make it a decorative addition to any home, whether trailing from a hanging basket, climbing a moss pole, or winding along a shelf.

Origin

Philodendron hederaceum grows wild in the tropical forests of Central America and the Caribbean, where it climbs along tree trunks and rock faces. At home it thrives equally well as a trailing plant as it does growing upward on a support stake.

Light

One of the heartleaf philodendron's great advantages is that it tolerates low light better than most tropical plants. It thrives in everything from shaded spots to rooms with good indirect light. But with more (indirect) light it grows faster and produces fresher, larger leaves. Direct sun must be avoided — the leaves burn easily and can become pale.

Watering

Let the top 2–3 cm of soil dry out between waterings. Philodendron is hardy and forgives forgotten waterings better than most. Slightly too dry is better than too wet — root rot is the most common problem. A simple method: insert a finger into the soil. Dry? Water. Moist? Wait.

Humidity & Temperature

Normal room air is perfectly sufficient — philodendron is not as sensitive to dry air as many other tropical plants. It thrives at temperatures between 16–29 °C. Avoid cold drafts and placement near radiators or air conditioning.

Fertilising

Fertilise monthly during the growing period (spring–summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Skip fertilising in autumn and winter.

Propagation

Philodendron is one of the easiest plants to propagate: cut off a piece with at least one leaf and one node, place in water until roots form (1–3 weeks), then plant in light, well-draining soil.
