Christmas Cactus

Christmas Cactus

Easy

Schlumbergera

The Christmas cactus is the gentlest of cacti: no thorns, simple needs, and a December bloom that blankets the plant. Specimens live for generations and are passed down as heirlooms.

Origin and natural habitat

Schlumbergera grows as an epiphyte on tree branches in Brazil's Atlantic forest, in shade and humidity — a world apart from desert cacti. Hence its preference for indirect light and moderate moisture.

Care

Light

Bright indirect spot. It enjoys a shady balcony in summer. Avoid moving it while buds form — it dislikes change.

Watering

Let the top of the soil dry slightly between waterings. More moisture than a desert cactus, less than a typical houseplant. Mist budding plants occasionally.

Soil and feeding

Airy potting soil with perlite. For December buds: a cool spot (15–18 °C) and twelve hours of darkness per day from October. Feed during the growing season.

Common problems

Bud drop comes from moving, draughts, or big temperature swings. Rot at the joints means overwatering. White cottony tufts are mealybugs — treat with alcohol or soapy water.

Good to know

Well cared for, a Christmas cactus can live for over fifty years and grow into a truly large hanging plant. Safe for cats and dogs.
